Carers Development

A carer is someone who, without payment, provides help and support to a friend, relative or neighbour who couldn't manage otherwise because of frailty, illness or disability.

Sarah Lambrianou is the Carers Development Worker.
Karen Smith is an assistant to the Carers Project.
Giuliana Martino is an assitant to the Carers Project.

The Carers Project

Caring for one another person is often rewarding and fulfilling experience, however it can also be extremely demanding. You can become emotionally and physically drained making it increasingly difficult to cope. The government strives to keep those affected by ill health or disability in their own homes and so your role as a carer is a very important one.

Did you know that?

  • There are 6 million carers throughout the uk!
  • 3 Million carers work part time and provide over 50 hours of care each week!
  • Women are more likely to have a caring role than men. However male carers make-up 42% and they are often working too!
  • Those carers who provide 50 hours of care or above per week are themselves likely to become ill!

Help us to help you

The Carers’ Project wants to reach as many carers as possible with information, support and opportunities to meet together, and one another and with health and social care professionals.
If you are a working carer we would like to hear from you how best we can support you.
If you consider yourself as being from an ethnic minority and are a carer, please let us know if you need more help due to language or cultural differences.

Eating Disorders Carers Group

Eating Disorders

Caring for someone with an Eating Disorder can be an enormous burden, bringing with it feelings of frustration, fear, anxiety and isolation. Self esteem and self confidence can be affectd as you watch a loved one suffer from an illness that you often fell powerless to do anything about, and you may feel unable to deal with the resulting stresses.
Feelings of powerlessness can often stem from not knowing where to get help, or from being unable to exchange ideas with somebody else who is going through a similar crisis.
Carers need to look after their own well eing as they play a very important part in, and can have a very positive effect on, the recovery of those they look after.
The purpose of this Carers Group is to provide a mutually supportive and confidential environment for sharing experiences and ideas.
WHERE?
We meet once a month on the first floor of the Brandon Unit mostly on the third Wednesday of the month although do call to clarify as this can change during school holidays etc. We welcome all carers of people with an Eating Sisorder or those living wiht someone who they think may have an Eating Disorder. The room we meet in GT3/4 on the Beaumanor Ward. You can turn up on the day or contact us beforehand. For more details please call Sarah on 0116 2810026 or ask a member of staff on the Beaumanor Unit.
This group has been set up and run by carers for carers. With the advantage of being held within the Eating Disorder Unit setting the group is fully supported by the staff on the unit and also a Carers Development worker from Oadby & Wigston Community Action.

NEW PATHWAY FOR MOTOR NEURONE DISEASE

Neurology and Palliative care services and Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have been working togehter with representatives from the primary care, social servicces and specialist services to develop a clear pathway for people with motor neurone disease and theri carers from diagnosis to end of life care.
Motor Neurone disease(MND)is a life limiting progressive neurodegenerative illness which causes devastating symptons for people with the condition.
The MND pathway, which originated from a mapping day in March 2005, aims to promote clear patways of communication between service providers, promote timely anticipation of evolving need and advanced care planning and develp[ systems to avoid unwanted emergency admissions to hospital.
The project is staffed by one project worker with secretarial support. A number of multi - proffessional groups have been set up to focus on some of the issues highlighted at the mapping day.
Many improvements to MND care have been achieved within existing resources and would not been possible without the help, advice and support of people with MND and their carers. These include a directory of local contacts for people with the disease, establishing a clinic for people with MND and planning end of life care. For more information on the MND pathways visit the University Hospital of Leicester website.
