Youth Volunteering

I did my volunteer work at Woodland Grange Primary School for a year. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience; it gave me the opportunity to challenge my ability to teach P.E. to young children. This included getting their attention, teaching them the skill and then getting them to perform it by themselves. Some times the tasks proved difficult, as they were very young and really just wanted to play.

The work experience gave me intrinsic rewards as it made me feel good, because it was very fun. I liked to see the children as being my friends instead of them seeing me as their teacher and being really strict with them.

Sometimes I’d let them choose what they wanted to do for a lesson. I feel that this benefited them because they would have to use their imagination and think back to previous lessons on what we had done before, and pick their favourite parts.

Even though it was over two years ago now I have seen a few of them out and they still remember me and ask if I can go back. This shows that they enjoyed my lessons and it makes me feel good.

I have benefited from the experience as I can write on my reference that I have done volunteer work. Which shows that I am motivated to work without getting paid. Also it’s good for my reference, because if I ever wanted to work with children it shows that I have already got experience.

I would recommend P.E. in the primaries to anyone as it is a great experience. What I learned in that year, I will never forget.

My youth volunteering experience was much more rewarding than I imagined! The children looked forward to my visit and the smile on their faces was priceless! you could see result of your help with their math's skills which makes you feel like you've achieved something. I would recommend this experience to anyone because you really do gain something out of it! even if it is finding out the best PG movie at the time! the children appreciate your time just as much as you begin to enjoy theirs!
